Does a customer need to create a log-in in order to purchase something from the store?

Also, how do I make the store viewable to the public? When I enter the URL I get a force.com log-in page.

Yes, while purchasing, customers can register or they can sign up and sign in before purchasing. Regarding the store, once you create the Store, the Store URL will display, and you can share that URL with customers directly.
