  • 500 character limit on custom question answers?

Is there a way to lift the limit on characters on users' answers to custom questions? I see in a recent release it went up to 1000 from 500 (we need to upgrade), but it looks like this is a Long Text field @32,000 characters. Since my organization is using this form for volunteer applications, there's a use case for fairly long responses and more than 1,000 would be great.

    Thanks!

    Good day @David Reed

As of now the limit is 500 characters for text area and 255 characters for all other options. However, I have forwarded this to our developers to see the possibilities to increase the character limit.

      Hello,

Thank you for upgrading our instance. I had hoped that per release notes this would increase the limit to 1000 characters, but I am still seeing the form at only 500 characters. Can you help clarify when/how it's possible to increase the limit, if this is available?

      Thanks,
      David

        Good day David Reed

Which form are you referring to? Please give us the link to the form so we can review.

As for lifting it to more than 1000 that is not an easy task. Not that it is hard to program as nothing is hard in that respect but Salesforce has a limit of 32K characters and increasing that size creates problem when we post that long text to Salesforce as it will generate error given all the other information we have to post on top of the questions & answers.

Please let us know the form you are using so we can review what your issue is.

            Good day David Reed

Sorry but the limit is our API limit and it is set since Salesforce's limitation does not let us post the data if the total post exceeds 32K characters. The XML that posts to Salesforce is the total number of characters in the form, including all payment, billing, answer to custom questions and questions.

The limit is a hard limit and at this time there is no plan to increase it. For any increase to happen all of our apps as well as Salesforce's field have to be changed. Salesforce's character limit of 32K is the final limiting factor.

Your instance is also a release behind - if you grant us login access we can gladly update it to the latest release.

Thank you for updating us. The organization ID is 00Dj0000001sv8B.

So do I understand correctly that after the update is completed, the character limit will be 1,000, and we should not expect any further increases?

It is highly recommended that you login to the Connect & re-establish the connection. You may see that your account is already connected but this does not mean the new information has posted to Salesforce.

                  Good day David Reed

The limit is 500 characters and it cannot be increased. As of now that limit is the maximum and in Salesforce it was adjusted in the recent update to 500 from 255 characters.

The custom question limit is the core limit in our API and all products. Changing it requires a major overhaul of all apps as well as major changes to the Salesforce implementation given the 32K character limit. Even at 500 characters we have problem with Salesforce's limitation when there are many questions and answers.

                  Sorry for the inconvenience.

We received a message from an upset donor that typed a lengthy memorial message in the custom text box and it was cut off because of the character limit. On screen it let her enter her entire message in the box but when she submitted it she noticed her message was cut short. This is a major customer service issue for us. Is there any way to retrieve the message? Can you give us the option to display a character count box? This is our form - https://connect.clickandpledge.com/w...69990935265277

Sorry for the inconvenience. I see what you are referring to. We can't retrieve the message but I have forwarded this to our developers to see the possibilities to limit the textarea with 500 characters on the page itself.
