  • Temporarily disabling Salesforce sync for data migration

    Hello,
I'm working with a client who needs to temporarily pause the Salesforce sync (contact creation, donation creation, etc.) due to us migrating an external data set.
They are currently using Click & Pledge Payment-as-a-Service with the semi-automatic Contact Creation set. Contributions with Contact matches are passing through automatically, where everything else goes in to C&P Temporary Contacts for manual review. We'd like to pause all of this for two days while we complete our data migration and have all the transactions just queue up in C&P. Then when we turn things back on after a couple days, we want to everything to process as usual. What do we need to do to pause? And what do we need to do to re-start?
    Thanks!

    Good day @OneTenthConsulting

The easiest way is to change the contact creation mode to Manual for the next two days or until you finish the data migration. In this case, all incoming data will sit in Temporary Contacts though there are matches so that later you can review and process it from there.

    Hope that helps.

Just to be sure, will this pause donations too, or just the contacts getting created? We want to temporarily pause donations. Please advise. Thanks!

        Hi OneTenthConsulting ,

You may want to review Donor Management with Salesforce: How Data Posts to Salesforce.

Your donation forms are not paused by changing the mode to manual, just the processing of Temporary Contacts is suspended. Donations continue to be logged in your Click & Pledge account (which you would review in CONNECT), and the "raw data" continues to enter Salesforce (as C&P Data records)- it's just not tied to a Contact, and no C&P Transaction or Opportunity record is created.

So, there are two approaches you could take:
        • The first method, recommended above, by switching the Match Mode to Manual:
Pro: All the data is still entering Salesforce, but waits until after your migration to tie the data to your standard objects: Accounts, Contacts, Opportunities, Campaigns. This means you won't need to go into CONNECT afterwards, and post each transaction again

Con: You will need to manually process any of the Temporary Contacts created by transactions during this time.
        • A second method: disconnect the Click & Pledge account from Salesforce in CONNECT.
Pro: Unlike the above method, everything still sits in the C&P Account waiting to be processed. When you re-establish the connection with Salesforce, and post those transactions, they will attempt the match exactly as they did before.

Con: You will need to manually post each transaction that has not been posted to Salesforce from CONNECT.

You're choosing between whether you want to process all the Temporary Contacts for the transactions afterward, or post all the transactions to Salesforce from CONNECT afterward. Your users are probably familiar with processing Temporary Contacts, so that might be simpler for them to manage themselves.

With the second method, you could also provide us a date range, once you've completed the migration, and we can mass re-post transactions from CONNECT to Salesforce during that date range. This saves you from having to post each transaction manually from CONNECT, and Temporary Contacts would be created for any failed matches just as they normally would.

Whether or not one method works better than the other depends on what you're changing during the migration.

Okay, this is frustrating. I specifically asked how we "pause the Salesforce sync (contact creation, donation creation, etc.)" and I included donations in my description. But the solution you gave me does not pause donation creation. I will try disconnecting now, but how do I fix these transactions later without creating duplicates?

            Good day @OneTenthConsulting

Sorry for your frustration. But we are trying to explain the ways you can approach to stop the creation of Contacts and Donations/Opportunities.

However, if you find no issues reviewing temporary contacts and processing them manually after data migration, then you can switch the Match Mode to Manual so that it will not create Contacts, Donation/Opportunity...etc, until you review the temporary contact and process it.

As stated above, both of the above approaches will not create the Contact and Donations/Opportunities in Salesforce. It is all your choice, you can either disconnect or change the contact creation mode to Manual to stop the Contact and Donation/Opportunity creation in Salesforce.

If you have already Disconnected the connection, then all you need to do is, once you completed the data migration, share the date range with us so that we can mass re-post transactions from CONNECT to Salesforce during that date range.

NOTE: It will not create the duplicates, Temporary Contacts would be created for any failed matches just as they normally do.

            Hope that helps.
