  • Cancelled credit card continues to get charged

A recurring donation set was tied to a credit card belonging to a SF admin using C&P for their org's instance. The card was successfully getting ran each month. In May of 2019 some fraudulent activity occurred on the card (unrelated to this org or C&P) so the credit card company closed that card out and gave a new card. The card owner does not remember if they updated their card info on the recurring record in SF. But the recurring record reflects the old cancelled card number. The recurring record still produced successful donations until September 2019 when it was finally declined. The recurring record still reflects the old card number. The card owner sees the recent transactions from may until August on their statement under the new credit card number.

Is it possible for a credit card that has been canceled to still produce successful transactions for a short time when it's being referenced monthly by a payment processor?

    Good day @[email protected]

NO, it won't. Once the recurring canceled, it will never process. Would you please share the order number of the recurring transaction so that we can review it what's going on?

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

      Thanks for looking into this.

To be clear: the recurring record never got canceled. It is still active, and it still has the credit card last four from the old credit card. But it contains successful donations after the point at which the credit card company switched it out with a new card. And only 4 months later did the credit card get declined. Here are more details and timeline:

      Recurring ID:299198
Original card was replaced in May 2019 but the recurring record does not appear to be updated to the new card info
Several transactions come in successfully between May and August:
      May: 38625-190515141122324
      June: 38625-190615150104471
      July: 38625-190715144011716
      August: 38625-190815140903670
And then finally the card is declined in September: 38625-190915143928679

As the card owner looks at her records she sees that the credit card company sent her a new card in May and that the following successful transactions appear to be connected to her newly provided card.

My only theory is that something was managed strangely on the Credit Card company's end. Possibly they didn't truly close the old card down until September and adjusted their records after closing it down.

The only other theory is that the card owner updated the card info on the recurring record but it was reverted in September (she doesn't remember if she updated the recurring or not).

If you want to look in SF the Org ID is: 00Do0000000an9P. You've been given access.

We may not solve this if it's on the credit card company's end. But if you see anything unusual about these records maybe it can provide a clue. We are ultimately just trying to make sure this doesn't happens for other supporrters.

We reviewed and noticed that the above recurring initiated with the following credit card last four digits #6842 later on May 2018 it has changed to #2964. Since then card NOT changed nor it has been declined until Sept 2019.

You can also see that in Salesforce under respective recurring record:
