  • Need lengthy picklist on donation form

I need donors to select their affiliation (church city, church name) from a picklist that contains 330+ options. I've tried a SKU (though perhaps incorrectly), tried mapping a custom question, tried copying the list into the custom question form but nothing seems to work. I need this picklist (field: Church Reference Name) to appear in the Templed Hills campaign donation form and ideally in the mobile form, though that's secondary. I've done something similar in an event form, but can't make it work with the donation. I've granted access, if you need that. Thanks.

    Good day @revcheri

Would you please share the link URL of the donation form so that we know the source of the form?

        Good day @revcheri

May I know what issue you are facing when you add 300+ options in the picklist? Please share the complete picklist options here so that we can review.

Please note that the overall limit of the picklist options is 2500 characters only and 100 characters limit for per option. That means you may give the number of picklist options as far as it should not cross the limit of 2500 characters.

          revcheri ,

You have a long list that you need to accomodate; you've bumped into the limit, but do you think it's an unreasonable limit?

Here's some other approaches to work within the limit:
          • Create separate Connect Campaigns for each city
            • direct users to select their city link on the website prior to arriving at the form for their Campaign
            • the donations can still be directed to the same Salesforce Campaign
          • Use zipcodes rather than city names- this way, the city names are reduced to 5 characters, but you can still define the churches that have the same names
          • Only add the city names when the church names are exactly the same
          • Some of you list uses 'United Church of Christ', where clearly in other places you use 'UCC'- if all the churches are UCC, then there is an option to save lots of characters

Are any of these approaches acceptable?

            OR, an even better approach!

Use a Conditional Custom Question, and then set up a separate section and Church List for each City- because the values of the picklist are not in the same question, you are far less likely to encounter the limit, and it's a better user experience.

              Amanda,

I appreciate your thinking about this creatively. When we chatted on the live support call, you had thought the limit was 500 options — but you may not have been aware of the character limit at the time. Having created a similar list for an Event with a similar client, I didn't imagine I'd run into this problem, so I appreciate your help. The short version of what's below is that the current limit is still going to be a problem.

              Here's the context —
My client is doing a capital campaign for a regional church/denominational body in Ohio where they have 330+ churches — a lot of them with the same name (First Congregational, for example). And given the chance, people abbreviate oddly. So I created a global picklist in Salesforce I call Church Reference Name, which styles the existing Account Name as CityName, ChurchName, and I've put that field on both the Account & Contact objects for the time being.( Eventually, we'll match these up as Primary Affiliations, but this is a new org for a discrete purpose for now, so that's not top priority.) When people make an online donation, I need them to indicate the church they attend so that we can track giving, marketing, etc (for obvious reasons). I'd like my picklist to be available on the donation page so the donors can find their church and we don't have to decipher a bunch of text entries and edit them manually. As you can see on the donation form on my client's website, my effort to add the list after our live support conversation hit the character limit early into the Cs.

This client may convert their CRM over to Salesforce in a few months, so the need is unlikely to be short-lived. And I have yet another client with a similar need, so this isn't a one-off issue. While the pressing need is probably larger than most others I'll run into, I doubt the 2500 character limit will even work for my 65-church client.

Here are my thoughts about the options you offered —

Create separate Connect Campaigns for each city
This client has churches all over Ohio, so we'd be looking at probably 100-ish campaigns. And if they convert their CRM, we'd need to duplicate all those campaigns again, right?

Use zip codes rather than city names
This could help a bit, but people aren't likely to know their church's ZIP code.

Only add the city names when the church names are exactly the same
I fear this would confuse users, and ultimately, I'm not sure I can save a ton of characters — I have 23 First Congregationals, 15 First UCCs, 24 Saint Johns, 16 Trinitys... Not a lot of creative church naming ;-)

If all the churches are UCC, then there is an option to save lots of characters
Yes, I could do this — and even remove the UCC for most of them. I could also do some abbreviating myself, though any abbreviating would mean the names will no longer match the Account Name so I'd need to consider how to connect the the Primary Affiliation later. Not realizing I would run into this problem, I was using the name the church uses for itself (some abbreviate, some don't).
All that said, I think I'm still going to have a problem given that I ran into the limit in the early Cs,

The campaign goes live this weekend, so I probably need to change back to the text boxes for now. But I hope we can find a solution soon.

              CLL

Oops! I missed it! In the list as it stands, I have 10,970 characters including spaces. I can reduce that by at least a third given your previous suggestions, assuming I can automate the Primary Affiliation match. What do you think?
