  • Recurring transaction set up in virtual terminal

    Hello,

I have a few recurring transactions to set up and I am having trouble with the virtual terminal. I put in the information as shown in the attached jpeg image for a monthly donation of $20 dollars, but then after putting in all the recurring transaction information, it says the installment amount will be $19.91. Is there a reason for this?

    Thank you!!

    Hello,

I just wanted to follow up on this issue I am having with recurring transactions. I just want to double check that I have the process correct before I set them up.

    Thank you!!

Just thought I'd try following up on this issue again. Could you provide me with an answer/solution so we can let our donors know why their gifts are showing up in strange amounts?

      Thanks so much

          Good day!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. We understand the issue but unfortunately we are being challenged by our gateways. Let me explain and hopefully you will see how we are a bit stuck.

As for the math - you are absolutely right and 20 x 11 / 11 should be equal to 20. That does not take a math guru to solve the problem. But here is the issue.

The gateways require us to post items that are being processed and for a charge to happen we have to divide the unit cost so when all adds up the total also should add up. In other words the unit cost times quantity should add up to what it is being charge. That is essentially the problem.

          Here is what happens.

We have a total of $220 that needs to be divided by 11. Unfortunately we cannot divide the total by 11 since if you have many items in the basket we have to determine the unit cost of each item.

          What this means is:

          Quantity = 11
          Unit Price = $20
Months to be paid = 11

This means each time a payment is being made $20/11 = $1.818181818181818 needs to be charged. For the gateway we have to truncate this as a currency so the amount becomes $1.81 (this is the problem).

          So what this becomes is 11 payments of $1.81 which means: $1.85 x 11 = $19.91

As I said it totally makes the math go crazy but this is the issue.

May I suggest a solution that will work out to the same total value but is a bit different. If you charge $20 with quantity of 1 and then use subscription for 11 months you will end up charging $20 for 11 months which means the same thing at the end.

I am sorry for the problem.. Math is a bit strange and being a math person myself this setting at our gateways drives me crazy but we have no choice. Our unit price and total has to match and there is nothing else we can do about it. The solution I presented should work.

On a lighter side, if you find math fascinating (like me) take a look at this article: https://medium.com/@marktdodds/the-r...2-a8cc23dea793

          where 1+2+3+4+5+6+.... = -1/12

that is how our gateways do things at times.

Thank you! I appreciate the detailed response. This does make sense and I absolutely understand why it is set up that way. We'll be sure to use the subscription option for cases like this in the future.

            Thank you again!
