What is Connections?

This link describes the C&P Miscellaneous Information VF component for the contact page layout:

On the VF page there is a Connections section with an Add/Update Connection button.

What is the function of the Connections record and where is it documented? I searched the manual.clickandpledge.com and found nothing.

The Connection feature allows for defining relationships so soft credit and contact roles may be assigned based on SKU by varying amounts. It is all discussed in the post.
