Purpose of C&P Online record type for contact?

What is the purposes of the C&P Online record type for contacts? Is it used for contacts created through the online donation process? Can we change the C&P process to use our own record type instead of C&P Online?

This record type is generic as we needed something to post too. You can use whatever record type you would like.
