  • Confused by Account settings

    Hello,

I am a little confused about the Contact and Account settings.

From what I understand, every donation (opportunity) has to be tied to an account. If this is so, however, why is it that there is a setting to NOT create a new account for new contacts? How can C&P not create a new account if a donation always has to be tied to an account?

Second question: I am reviewing my Accounts tab, and noticed that the account that was created when I made a sample donation does not have an Account Record Type associated with it. Why is this so?

(If it helps at all, my current contact/account setting is one-to-one)

    Thank you!

    - Lukas

    UPDATE:

Please feel free to ignore the second question. I figure this is because at the time I made the sample donation, the only available account record type was "master" (i.e. SF's default record type for accounts). Since then, I have added a number of new, custom account record types.

This does make me wonder, however: when C&P creates a new account when a donation is made, what is the record type of that account?

    Good day Lucas,

I moved your thread to the Salesforce Payment application instead of the API platform where it was originally posted.

You asked: "From what I understand, every donation (opportunity) has to be tied to an account. If this is so, however, why is it that there is a setting to NOT create a new account for new contacts? How can C&P not create a new account if a donation always has to be tied to an account?"

Reply: We have clients that use the Nonprofit Starter Pack (NPSP) and that application creates an account automatically anytime a Contact is added. That option is available for NPSP users. In the 7.2 release that option will not show up if you have the NPSP installed and it will autoconfigure it but for others it is still a choice.

    You asked:
This does make me wonder, however: when C&P creates a new account when a donation is made, what is the record type of that account?

Reply: We assign Record Type for the Contact but not Account and the Record Type may be customized through the C&P Settings > Contacts & Accounts. I will double check what we do with Accounts and follow up with another post.

      Great, thank you!

So you know why I asked about the Account record types. Previously, I only had the "master" record type (i.e. no custom record types were available). I am now using custom record types within Accounts for other purposes. It seems once custom record types become available, you can no longer make "master" as the account record type default.

This means every time a new account is created (whether directly or because NPSP created it the account when it created a contact), it has to default to some account record type. It'd be great if I could have a "Donors" account record type and all accounts created by NPSP when someone donates via C&P had that record type.

Sorry if that is not very clear.

        Lucas,

You have a valid point and it makes sense for the flexibility to exist since we have options for everything else.

Currently we are in the middle version 8.0 development and I will request this to be added to it. It is an easy feature to add and should be part of the system.

Before you ask! Release 8.0 is scheduled for May since it has a lot of new features and we believe it will add a lot of power to our application.

We love to hear ideas that our clients have to help with the development of the application. Let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
