  • Any relation between initial install and creation of a SF self-signed certificate?

I have a customer that has received notice that a self-signed certificate in Salesforce is expiring in 10 days. I do not know why this certificate exists and can find nothing to correlate except that C&P was installed on the same day. The purpose of the certificate; SelfSignedCert_08Mar2014_150936, is either to "authenticate single sign-on with an external website, or when using your organization as an identity provider. You only need to generate a Salesforce certificate if an external website needs verification that a request is coming from a salesforce.com organization.Mutual authentication certificates are used when an HTTPS request is made to a salesforce.com organization from a third-party service on a specified port. Contact your salesforce.com support representative to enable this feature. " Was this something C&P needed and if so, what happens when it expires? Thank you.
    Regards.
