Hi Chris,
We have upped the limit on the Custom Question field from 80 to 200 characters in the latest beta release. To install the beta, make sure you're only logged into the Salesforce instance where you would like to install, go to the 2020-Q2 Beta Release post in the Salesforce Apps: Beta Releases group, and click on the Installation link.
You might want to keep an eye on this group until our next official release, as we may update the Beta regularly, and you'll want to stay up to date.

Yes the custom question length for Event Management Custom Question is 80 characters. There is no way for you to modify the field to increase that.
I will move your post to the New Ideas and Suggestions group, and bring your idea up with the Development Team to consider for a future release.

Hi, is the custom question length for an event management custom question set to 80 Characters? Is there a way to get this increased? I understand that 80 is the cap in Salesforce, but that limit shouldn't impact the limit that can be used for an event registration. It is helpful to present a more thoughtful question to the registrant/attendee, yet map to a more condensed version of the question in Salesforce. It seems like you could allow for more characters for registration purposes and still map it to a question ins Salesforce with less characters.
