  • Required Picklist with Blank Value to Force a Choice

We were hoping to have picklist question that didn't have a default value, so that it would require users to choose an option. If there is a default value to a required question, it's easier for people to skip over. This particular question is going to designate funds to different programs and we want to ensure that people actually read the question instead of just skimming past it and submitting with a default program designation.

When I tested the picklist question, I didn't choose a default value on the backend, but when the form loads it fills that question with the first option. When you click submit, it apparently accepts that first option as the filled in answer (even though it's not the default and wasn't chosen by the user).

I also tried this with a radio button list, and the form loads with no options chosen, but when you click submit an error does not show up saying that no option has been chosen even though the question is required. I'm guessing it will just pass the first option through as well, even though it wasn't selected as the default value (and no option shows as being chosen on the front end).

Is it possible to have a required picklist/radio button list that defaults to a blank option and requires the user to pick an option before submitting the form?

    Good day @kwclick5

I see what you are referring to. The option for picklist you are looking for is already added and hopefully the update will be out in next two weeks.

Hi, I wanted to check in on this again. We upgraded to the new version of Connect, but this issue doesn't seem to be fixed. Has it been pushed to the next release?

It is already included in the update. In order to reflect the change for your existing custom questions, you just need to edit & update the existing mandatory custom question so the selected option will be added by default.

Please check and let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Hmm. I went in to edit them, but I'm still not seeing an option to force a value to be picked when no option is selected as default. I think we may be talking about different things, so let me explain my use-case again. So, say I have a picklist with three values: Program1, Program2, and Program3 and I make it required. I want the form to force the donor to pick one value, but not to have a default value. I see in Connect when a selected option is not picked the picklist displays with Select (which I think is a change). But if I try to submit the form without picking an option, it doesn't turn red and force a choice (even though that field is required).

I know and the feature you requested is included.

              Here is your form: https://connect.clickandpledge.com/w...78075691510622

As you can see it is required. For the checkbox list, radio buttons & Picklist, we are showing the error like this & the highlighted red color error is only for text filed.

I see where the confusion was. I was loading a blank form and pressing Give Now and not seeing that box highlighted red. But, if I fill out the rest of the form and then click Give Now it does give a validation error. Thanks for your time in clarifying this to me!
