Setting minimum and maximum donation amounts

Greetings!

I want a button on the donation page that allows donors to enter their own amount. In Campaign Details>Payment Settings>Payment Details I selected Show Other Field. I entered a Minimum and Maximum Value under the assumption that donors would not be allowed to enter an amount outside those parameters. But when I entered an amount on the donation page higher than the maximum I did not receive an error message.

So, what is the purpose of the Min Value and Max Value fields and while we're at it, the purpose of $ Default Amount? And finally, how do I prevent donors from entering a donation amount outside my stated parameters?

Please note that the error/warning message will appear at the time of submission of the form. Are you saying you don't see any message even at the time of clicking submit button?
