  • Recurring Donations & Salesforce Opportunity Creation

    Hi there,

    We're preparing to launch a Advanced Checkout Page for recurring memberships at our organization. Before we do I'd like to clarify how recurring payments are handled in Salesforce.

    Our C&P system is set to "Create an Opportunity for each transaction" and "Use Products for each item in an Opportunity".

    Is an opportunity created for each payment in a recurring series? (example: 12 opportunities created for a year-long monthly recurring membership)

    OR

    Are the transaction details added to one master opportunity? (example: 1 opportunity created for a year-long monthly recurring membership)

    Good day!

    Each transaction creates opportunities of its own and you will have 12 opportunities with associated products.

    The master transaction will be in the recurring object and all opportunities will show up as related fields to the master recurring entry.

    In C&P Recurring tab:

    A recurring transaction will show related transactions and related opportunities as show above.

      Thanks for the response! I now have a follow up question.

      Is there a way to specify the opportunity record type of recurring transactions?

      Under C&P Settings, Opportunity tab, in Salesforce it appears that we can only alter record types based on WID. Since recurring transactions (and virtual terminal transactions) don't have a WID, how do you recommend we handle changing the record type?

        This option is available in the Opportunity Record Types in the Settings as shown below:

        But it is only available for Opportunities and NOT when you choose Opportunity > Products. Are you using Opportunity > Products?

          Good day!

          Just as an added note:

          In Opportunity > Product mode we add Record Type to Products based on the recurring transactions. I added a feature request for the next release to include Recurring to conditions for Record Type for Opportunities as well.

          I am not sure if it will make it in the release scheduled for the week of May 13th.

            Our developers added your request to the next version to be released the week of May 13. See below:

            With the new release when the mode is set to Opportunity > Products the Record Type for New Opportunities will also have the option for "Is Recurring".

              Hi there!

              Apologies if this posts twice, I didn't see my last comment post so I'm submitting again.

              Thanks for adding this feature to your May 13th release. I believe this will solve our problem with setting the record type of recurring transactions.

              How do you recommend we set the record type of Virtual Terminal transactions?
