Peter,
Nothing has disappeared from anywhere.
Remember that if you are adding options to a product then the options will have image and not the product. Perhaps you have enabled product option and now are not seeing images for product since they are moved to options.
Let me know if what I explained is your question. If not use an image of the section in the post so I can see what you are referring to.
