Customize email receipt?

To what extent can we customize the email receipt? If possible, my client would like the email receipt to consist of a short message only, and for the details to be in the attached PDF only. Also, we would like to move the order of elements on the receipt and perhaps add and/or subtract some elements from the display. Please advise, thank you.

The standard system reports cannot be customized other than the text that appears in the middle. The rest of the receipt is standard.

If you are using Salesforce then you may do whatever you want since using the Designer gives you the ability to design anything you want and send the receipt based on items paid for.
