standardizing country coming into Salesforce

We use "USA" as our standard method of entering country into Salesforce. Through the FaaS, we're only passing the code '840'- but this is sometimes entered into Salesforce as "United States" and others as "United States of America".

Any way to at least make this consistent, if we can't have the field value "USA"?

You can do this by enabling Country / State database. See below:
